Your heat pump works hard year-round—keeping you cool in the summer and warm in the winter. But something as simple as tall grass, leaves, or yard debris around your outdoor unit can cause serious problems for both efficiency and lifespan. Overgrown vegetation and clutter create perfect hiding spots for rodents. Mice and other critters may chew wires, build nests, or damage sensitive components inside the unit—turning a small problem into a major breakdown.

We recently helped a homeowner whose heat pump failed because mice were looking for a warm place to build a nest, and they chose the outdoor unit of the heat pump. The result? Leaking, chewed wires, and a very expensive repair bill that could have been prevented with a little routine upkeep.

Critters aren’t the only concern. When weeds, grass, or leaves crowd the unit, airflow is restricted, forcing the system to work harder waste energy, and wear out faster.

A few minutes of yard work can save you hundreds in repairs.

  • Maintain 2–3 feet of clear space around your unit.
  • After mowing or trimming, remove clippings and leaves from the base.
  • Do a quick seasonal cleanup before summer and winter.
  • Discourage pests by trimming vegetation and removing clutter that could provide shelter.

What to Watch for in a heat pump that has been compromised.

  1. Struggling airflow – weak indoor circulation, longer run times, or fans that sound strained.
  2. Uneven heating or cooling – hot and cold spots indoors caused by restricted circulation.
  3. Unexpected energy bills – sudden spikes that don’t match the season or your usage.
  4. Strange noises – rattling, buzzing, or grinding from the outdoor unit.
  5. Frequent repairs or shutdowns – chewed wires, clogged parts, or refrigerant leaks.
