- Plante Residence, Waterbury Center, VT
Background Information
- 2003 carriage style house
- 2,353 square feet of heated space including a finished basement.
- Very large attic space insulated with fiberglass batts on the flats, slopes, and vertical walls.
- Finished basement with fiberglass batts fit into the band sill.
Energy Efficiency Measures Installed
- Air sealed attic and re-insulated using blown cellulose insulation on the flats and light slopes (R-60), dense pack cellulose insulation in cavities (R-60+), and closed-cell spray foam insulation on the vertical walls (R-20).
- Removed fiberglass insulatino from band sill and installed closed-cell foam insulation (R-20).
- Building Energy also installed a solar hot water system and 4 kW solar electric system.
Results
- 45% reduction in air leakage
- Estimated 42% of annual heating energy savings for insulation/air sealing improvements.
- Solar hot water system will provide roughly 60%-70% of the annual hot water usage for a typical two-person household, assuming 40 gallons of hot water usage per day.
- Solar electric system will provide +/- 55% of the current annual electric use.
• “This was a great project, from concept to completion. Building Energy was very professional at every step. They worked with our schedule to implement the energy improvements. The work was done as specified in the project plans, within the budget quoted, without any surprises. The project staff were great in explaining the enhancements and in instructing us during the final walk-through. Building Energy took care of the paperwork involved in submitting for energy rebates and in advising us about our eligible tax credits. These financial factors obviously influenced our decision to commit to this energy project. We are very pleased with the results and have recommended Building Energy to others.””
